So you are curious about how to implement a digital textbook for your class...
Here are two frameworks that may be helpful to consider when introducing a digital textbook to your class- the SECTIONS framework and the SAMR model.
SECTIONS framework
Students: Is the digital textbook appropriate for the student audience? What do you know about your students?
Ease of use & reliability: Is the digital textbook easy to use and reliable?
Cost: What is the cost per learner? Are you going to use an OER?
Teaching functions: What kind of instructional approach will you use with the digital textbooks?
Interaction: What kind of interaction does the digital textbook enable (if any)?
Organization issues: Are there barriers at your institution/in your class that may prevent the implementation of the digital textbook?
Networking: Can students use the digital textbook to network beyond the course?
Security & Privacy: If the digital textbook is collecting analytics, where is the data stored? How secure is it?
This framework is based off of work by Bates and the full text is available here (in a digital textbook that is an OER!):

The SAMR Model
![Picture](/uploads/9/2/9/2/92929980/the-samr-model_orig.jpg)
Created by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, this model evaluates the purpose of the digital tech. Are you using the digital textbook simply to replace a printed textbook? Or is there a way to redesign this instructional method so that you can enable your students to do something with the digital textbook that was not possible with a printed textbook?
